Casamance
A Human Experience in the Land of the Upright People in the Villages of Gambia and Casamance: Discover Multiculturalism, Ethnographic Richness, and Environmental Diversity.
Talking about Senegambia is not just about describing a geographical space, but about a millennia-old history of coexistence and blending identities among the tribes of West Africa. For over a thousand years, this region has been a meeting point for different cultures and traditions. On this journey, you will have the chance to immerse yourself in the tribes of Senegambia, explore their natural surroundings, and uncover the ecological wealth of their territories. Further south, we will arrive at the natural region of Casamance, a territory isolated from the rest of Senegal by the Republic of Gambia, forming an enclave within the country. The “Green Casamance,” also known as the Granary of Senegal or Diola Country, is a tropical region nourished by the Casamance River, which flows from west to east.
Casamance is home to Senegal’s main ethnic tribes and offers an impressive variety of landscapes, ensuring a unique experience. From peaceful villages to paradisiacal beaches, this journey will provide an authentic immersion into the local culture. You will not only discover the landscapes but also the customs, traditions, and daily lives of the communities that inhabit this corner of Africa. Thanks to the collaboration of our local guides, you will enjoy a seamless integration between visitors and the local villages, deeply understanding their customs and experiencing firsthand the magic of Black Africa.
Day 1. ORIGIN – TUJERENG
Day 2. TUJERENG – SELEKY
Day 3. SELEKY – ENAMPOR - SELEKY
This day will be dedicated to cultural immersion and direct contact with the local community. We will head to the forest, where we will be welcomed by palm wine harvesters, who will teach us their ancestral technique for extracting palm wine, a traditional and highly valued liquor in the region.
In the sacred forest of Enampor, we will learn about the altars and fetishes of the ‘Rain King,’ figures of great significance within the local culture. In the afternoon, we will explore the village of Séléky, discovering its traditional neighborhoods and the daily lives of its inhabitants. The day will end with a cultural performance by the women of the village, who will showcase their traditional dances. Accommodation at the Séléky Solidarity Camp. Half board (HB).
Day 4. SELEKY – ELOUBALINE - OUSSOUYE
Day 5. OUSSOUYE – MLOMP – CARABANE – CACHOUANE
We will depart for the island of Cachouane, but along the way, we will stop in Mlomp, a village famous for its ancestral traditions and impressive silk cotton trees. We will continue to Elinkine, a picturesque fishing village, where we will take a boat to Carabane. This island was the first capital of Casamance, and although few remnants of the French occupation remain, its rich history and colonial architecture are still points of interest. Accommodation at the Sunka Camp. Half board (HB).
Day 6. CACHOUANE – DIEMBERING – CAP SKIRRING
